The Pharm.D (Doctor of Pharmacy) program is a 6-year professional doctoral course designed to prepare students for a career as healthcare professionals in the pharmaceutical field. It includes 5 years of academic study and 1 year of internship/clinical training.
The curriculum covers pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical care, clinical pharmacy, patient counseling, and drug therapy management. Students gain hands-on experience through clinical rotations in hospitals and community pharmacies during the internship, working closely with healthcare teams to optimize medication therapy.
Pharm.D graduates are trained to provide direct patient care, manage medications, educate patients on drug use, and ensure safe and effective therapy. They can work in hospitals, clinics, research, regulatory bodies, and community pharmacies. The program also opens doors for specialization in areas like pharmacovigilance and drug development.
Eligibity
To be eligible for admission to the first year of the pharmacy course, a candidate must pass any of the following examinations
10+2 examination (HSE/CBSE/ICSE) with Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following subjects: Mathematics or Biology, scoring a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate for optional subjects.
Any other qualification approved by the Pharmacy Council of India as equivalent to any of the above examinations, provided that the student completes the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the course.
Seats shall be reserved for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes as per the instructions issued by the Central Government/State Government/Union Territory Administration from time to time.
Course Duration:
The course duration for the Pharm.D program is six academic years, with each academic year spread over a period of not less than 200 working days. The six-year period is divided into two phases:
consists of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth academic year.
consists of a one-year internship or residency training during the sixth year, involving posting in specialty units. This phase of training exposes a student to actual pharmacy practice or clinical pharmacy services and helps them acquire skills under supervision, making them capable of functioning independently.
